A Year Without

A few weeks ago I came across a blog that totally blew me away!

A Year Without Mirrors, the story of Kjerstin Gruys who decided in 2011 to live one year without mirrors. She blogged her way through the process, talking about how life without a reflection changed the way she looked at her body image. And all of this during the process of planning a wedding!

Inspired by Kjerstin, I began looking at my own life and wondering what things were influencing me, the way I saw myself and the way I enjoyed my life. While I know I don't have the discipline to live without something for a whole year, I began putting together a list of things I wanted to try to live without for a week, two or a month at a time. Things like television, cell phone, internet, meat, soda, mirrors, and even negativity.


But pulling out the bad things didn't seem like it would be enough. I wanted to add in good to my life. So not only will I experience A Year Without, I'll experience A Year With by adding in things to my life like a sunlight, meditation, walking, writing, sex, and saying thank you. All a week, two or a month in bulk.

A full year of examining the positive and negative things in life, and blogging through the process. In September I'm starting off with a bang by fasting out my biggest addictions: TV, Cell Phone, Internet, Speaking and Negativity. Each project will last a full week and then I'll blog the results.

One Week Without

One Month Without

  1. Mirrors 
  2. Soda 
  3. Eating Out
  4. Self Deprecation 

One Week With

  1. 100 Thank Yous 
  2. Sex Every Day 
  3. A Schedule 
  4. 30 Minutes of Daily Sunlight
  5. 30 Minutes of Daily Meditation
  6. Selfishness
  7. Being Artistic 

One Month With

  1. Daily Walking 
  2. Daily Writing 

Unfortunately, my list isn't complete and currently only adds up to 39 weeks of the 52 I need to fill. So please help me out and offer suggestions below in the comments.

What a great idea!
A week/month with daily reading-maybe a specific type of reading if you already read daily, like religious stuff, or reading for enjoyment.
A week without makeup
A week with treating yourself everyday-again something specific?
A week of special cooking daily
A week of socializing--a date with a friend every day, maybe a house/dinner party.
A week of making something crafy.
A week without social media-you are giving a week of internet up but I've noticed if I go online to read a blog or do some research I get lured away by FB, pinterest, twitter etc...
A week of taking pictures everyday...

I might end up using the Taking Pictures idea for a month long one. Depending if I can't find something else. Mostly because I already take a lot of pictures.

A week of smiling at everyone you meet but, not in a creepy way. Just acknowledging you see them.
A week with reading blogs on subjects you normally would not.
A week without texting. Phone calls are OK.

How about a week of "random acts of kindness?" Like you're in line at the Starbucks drive thru, and you pay for the guy behind you, or you tape a sign in a public bathroom saying "You look beautiful!"
