I spoke with a friend of mine the other day who has been married quite a long time. So long in fact that her husband is now retired. She confessed to me that in that entire time, she has never learned how to make gravy. This shocked me completely. I know how to make gravy! Of course, I purposely learned how because I hate the packet or canned kind of gravy.
This forced me to remember our first year of marriage and my sad attempts at cooking. I know that some of you don’t have to worry about this seeing that you are great cooks, or you’re very lucky and your husband does all the cooking. But I know that there are at least a few of you that have had embarrassing moments in the kitchen.
My friends, you are not alone!
The first year of our marriage I did an attempt to make pork chops. See, back then I hated touching raw meat. Everything about it grossed me out. Especially the fat. So what did I do? I cut the fat off and threw it away. The pork chops came out decent, which was an odd occurrence in itself. But the thing that came later was so worse.
About a week afterward, we began smelling a foul stench. We thought it was the dirty dishes, so we washed them. Then a week later we were sure it was the dishwasher, and then the floors, and the fridge. Over a month passed by and we could not find out where the smell was coming from!
Those of you who know better are probably already laughing. I decided to check the garbage disposal where I had thrown the pork-fat.
Or, okay, I made Matt check the disposal.
DO NOT PUT PORK FAT IN A GARBAGE DISPOSAL!!!
Daily Gratitudes:
- A husband who is willing to dig into a garbage disposal for me.
- Ibuprofen during a migraine.
- Dions Ranch Dressing.
- Reading scriptures as a family.
- Sleep!

LMBO! That is so funny! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Jia! Thanks so much entering my contest! I had NO idea about the pork fat thing! That is VERY useful info!
Hi! I entered Jen's contest as well and was just "hopping" around to see other entries. This was good! :) I had to laugh! I have had embarrassing kitchen moments as well. I did not know that about pork fat- good to know! One time early in our marriage, I set out a steak or something to thaw, but it disappeared. I thought maybe I had forgot to set it out and went on to make something else. Over the next couple weeks, we noticed a bad smell develop. We could NOT find it or get rid of it. Over a month later, when we were moving, we found the rancid steak (still in the package)- it had fallen between the stove and the frige in a box that was sitting there. So, it was a bummer that by the time we found the smell, it was time to move! I feel your pain! Nice to meet ya!
Jia-
So sorry to hear about your dog.
Hope today is better.

I didn't know about the porkfat. Oops... thanks for letting me know.
Big favor coming here... would you be willing to breakdown your chicken hot pocket recipe into a step by step for those who are still struggling in the kitchen? I saw the pic of them on happytobeathome.net. DH was over my shoulder today and let me know that he wishes we could afford hot pockets like he used to have as a kid.
I really don't know how to get started... what croissants to use? How hot to bake them? How long? Does everything just get mixed in a bowl and then scooped in? How much should go into each pocket? Yes, I'm completely clueless!
Thanks in advance...looking forward to poking around your blog some more...
Jia,
You crack me up.... My first turkey.... Yep, I baked it with the giblets still wrapped in plastic and stuck inside the neck... How is a girl to know...
Sheesh.. What a hoot your pork chop story.
God bless you girl and thank you for sharing your awesome testimony over at my place. Love you, Lynn
